I will always combine shipping unless the fragility and quantity of items means that it might jeopardize the stability of the product.
In most cases though, sending three to four plates or cups and saucers in one package should not be a problem. I can no longer rebate shipping cost so use the cart.
My books are always shipped Media Mail, so that cost should by fixed at .33 or less even though heavier books cost more than that.
