DESCRIPTION
This is a used Ludwig chrome-over-wood 9-piece drumset that recently came into our shop on trade. These drums date from the late 1980s - early/mid 1990s and are in outstanding structural condition with all 6-ply maple shells in-round, interiors clean, and original bearing edges in excellent shape. When this drumset came in, the exterior was a quite dirty, but we took apart every single piece of metal from every drum and meticulously cleaned, treated with rust remover, and oiled all threaded components. We also gave it all new heads: clear Remo Emperor batters over white Remo Ambassadors on the toms and a clear Remo PowerStroke 3 batter with fresh Ludwig logo head on the bass drum.
Even with all of the thorough cleaning you should expect to find age-appropriate signs of wear and tear (this is a great player's kit, just not a museum piece), including scuffs, scratches, and worn spots on the chrome wrap, some pitting and discoloration - but no significant rust - on most of the chrome hardware, and a few adaptations/replacements on some of the threaded metal bits. Below are other condition specifics to note. Please read through them carefully.
The six Modular Tom arms have had the Ludwig wing bolts replaced with matching 8mm bolts and wing nuts.
The 16" floor tom originally came with three legs and brackets (which are no longer available), so there are open holes where the brackets were once mounted. The 18" floor tom has never had leg brackets, so there are no unused holes.
The bass drum spurs have been replaced with Pearl SP-30 professional spurs. There are no visible extra holes resulting from this adaptation.
Most of the lug backing screws across the entire kit have been replaced with new Ludwig backing screws.
Both of the floor toms are outfitted with black RIMS Floor Tom Rings.
Several of the tom hoops have been replaced with new 2.3mm hoops.
The 18" floor tom and 22" bass drum are a few years newer than the other drums. Note the black rubber gaskets under their lugs where the other drums have none. The inside of their lugs have rubber retainer inserts, whereas all other older lugs have spring retainers packed with foam to eliminate buzz.
On the 6" tom, the thumb screw threads wore out on the modular bracket, which was then re-drilled and fitted with a larger hex bolt. The badge is missing from this drum as well.
On the bass drum tom arm mounting bracket, the inner metal pressure pad is missing so the bolt goes directly into the pole.
Most of the chrome hardware has small-to-moderate amounts of pitting, although there is very little rust.
There are multiple places on the original chrome wrap where the mirror finish has rubbed away, revealing a white/gray underlayer. See our closeup photo of the 14" tom for an indicative example.
The wrap on the top of the bass drum has some warping/wrinkling.
On the double-tom stand holding up the 6" and 8" toms, note that there is only one keyed set screw on each of the tom arms.
