I had the incredible good fortune of buying this artwork, along with multiple other paintings and splash art by Don Sherwood, from the estate of his lawyer's wife in Upstate, NY.
Offered here is an exceptional cartoon panel on paper. This is not a mass produced colored print  for syndication distribution or sale to the public - it is the original signed artwork proof  painted by Don Sherwood - it's one of a kind

There are are small corrections and perimeter repairs with whiteout.
This  appears to be a reduced printed "proof" copy on paper of the black and white splash page that has been colored by hand. Details and layout lines added in pencil prior to painting. Hand signed  by the artist with a dedication as seen.
The last photo shows the piece you are bidding on laying with the original India Ink splash page on artist board for reference only. The  splash art is listed  as a separate auction and not included in this offering.
It is believed that the large splash art was produced first (the original), and then the smaller version that is watercolored and corrected around the perimeter with white-out as seen.
Although I'm not quite sure, I believe this is a book cover or inside art for Gene Autry's book adaptations of his movies. The back has a hand written notation saying "cover 0"
Condition is very good with very minor small perimeter smudges and tears, ripples, minor yellowing and a few very light small foxing dots. This watercolor, along with others, was stored in a portfolio for many years. Never framed or displayed.
It would appear; based on the collection I purchased, that the lawyer/friend was a western fan, as all of the artwork passed to him by Sherwood is western movie/ serial themed with a personalized autograph and message. I'll be listing more as time and research permits.
Google "Don Sherwood artist". He has a long and well respected career as a syndicated cartoonist, comic book artist and illustration artist doing magazine covers. He also did all the artwork for the 1991 Camillus Knife collection called "The Riders Of The Silver Screen".
